Boswyck Farms was founded in 2008 by Lee Mandell. Bushwick and many other neighborhoods in New York City are considered “food deserts”: areas that lack adequate access to fresh, healthy produce. We want to help combat this problem through urban farming.
Bushwick (or Boswyck in Dutch) actually has a long farming history. In the 17th century, when the settlement of Boswyck was founded, it meant ‘town in the woods’ and was primarily home to food and tobacco farmers. Like the original tightly-knit colony, at Boswyck Farms we believe it takes a village — a strong community — to establish a healthy food system.
