The Vertical Wall Project on Randall’s Island was conducted by Boswyck Farms in partnership with Fluxxlab. The project serves as a prototype to demonstrate the potential for rooftop farming as a way to alleviate the taxed urban food system. It is designed to show ease of care as plants grow, as well as ease of harvest and distribution. Boswyck Farms provided design and building support, working to create a modular system design for the outside of city buildings. The project was completed in 2011.
This project was funded by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, and is a part of the Randall’s Island Park Urban Farm. Fluxxlab is a sustainable design practice focused on energy harvesting: turning small amounts of human power into electricity.
